Ulster-Scots Family Fun at the Ballyclare May Fair

The Ulster-Scots Agency is pleased to be supporting the 2016 Ballyclare May Fair between Tuesday 24th until Monday 30th May. Check out the spectacular programme of Ulster-Scots events and activities - the Ballyclare May Fair promises to have something for all the family!

This year’s fair will kick off on Tuesday 24th May with the ever popular traditional horse fair in Six Mile Water Park and a celebration of local food and drink to mark the 2016 NI Year of Food and Drink.  Celebrity chef, Paula McIntyre, will be demonstrating how to make delicious Ulster-Scots dishes at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm and local chef Daniel Harvey, from Daniel’s @ Tweedies will be cooking up some tasty treats for you to try at home at 4pm.

Also on Tuesday 24th May you can ‘Trace your family heritage’ with the Ulster Historical Foundation from 12pm - 5pm at the Town Hall.  Find out which trails will lead you down the path to your ancestors and how the Ulster-Scots emigrated across countries to become one of the world’s biggest Diasporas.

Later that evening, music will be at the forefront of this year’s festival with Stonewall Folk Group performing at the Market Square Car Park from 7pm - 9pm with well-known folk songs, jigs and reels.  The famous Ballyclare Mayfair Ceilidh with Alastair Scott Ceilidh Band will be taking place from 8pm - 10pm at the Town Hall (Entry to both concerts is free).

Friday 27th May will see Dr Andrew Sneddon of the University of Ulster deliver a talk on the Islandmagee Witch Trials from 3pm - 4.30pm at the Town Hall. 

Saturday 28th May sees the return of the fantastic May Fair Parade at 1pm when the town will come alive with entertainment and colour.  Celebrity chef, Jenny Bristow, will be cooking up a storm with local food from 11.30am and there will be music to entertain young and old from 11am with Ulster-Scots music, the Liberals and many more.

Other highlights throughout the week will include family fun days, James Huish & band, amusements, pet show, kids disco and an It’s a Knockout competition!  There will also be a spectacular fireworks display at 10.15pm on Saturday 28th  May in Ballyclare Town Centre.
