The Walled City Tattoo got under way in Londonderry in front of a jam-packed arena.

A crowd of thousands witnessed the spectacular event featuring a 600-strong cast telling the story of the city through music, song, dance and theatre as part of the UK City of Culture celebrations.

It's the first Tattoo held on the island of Ireland and features Irish and Highland dancers, drummers, pipers, acrobats and musicians.

They were joined by performers from Great Britain, the Republic, Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Tanzania.

A highlight of the production was the Northern Ireland debut of the world's leading exhibition drum corp, the Swiss-based Top Secret.

The setting for the Tattoo at the former Ebrington Barracks was a fitting backdrop with its imposing historic buildings and colourful history dating back hundreds of years.

Culture Minister Caral ni Chuilin was at Ebrington Square to see the spectacular performance at first hand. She said: "It is fitting that the Walled City Tattoo, inspired by the rich heritage of the city, is being held here in one of its newest venues.  "The City of Culture is part of a new chapter being added to the story of Derry. It is part of the future story, that of a city with a bright future.  "Arts and culture can be vehicles for empowerment and engagement. They can act as a catalyst for change.

"The people of Derry have always known about the talent, vibrancy and flair they have. It is just that 2013 has showcased this to everyone else."

The Walled City Tattoo runs until Saturday night, with tickets priced from £18.50.
