It is just 1 week to go until The Belfast Tattoo returns in September 2015, with over 600 performers, and will showcase some of the finest marching bands, musicians, and dancers from across Ulster and beyond, in a two hour show, building up to the Grand Finale of the Massed Pipe And Drums.
The Performers will be arriving from Europe and Canada this weekend to finalise their rehearsals. This year, we are delighted that there will be many overseas visitors attending The 2015 Belfast Tattoo
We are delighted to confirm the full line-up with The Band Of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines, being the headline act for 2015, who are world-renowned for their musicianship and precision marching performance.

Other highlights for the 2015 Belfast Tattoo include an 80-strong dance troupe of Highland dancers and Irish dancers, performing to a piece of music specially written for this event.
2015 sees the introduction of a Matinee performance on Saturday afternoon, and a Family Ticket is also available to purchase for the Matinee.
The 2015 Belfast Tattoo will contain a packed list of international, as well as local performers. HM Royal Marines Band Scotland
The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines needs little introduction. These versatile and talented musicians play all over Scotland and the North of England, and their recent ceremonial duties include provision of the military music at the launch of the last of the Daring class destroyers, HMS Duncan, at Scotstoun, and the commissioning of the submarine HMS Astute at Faslane last year.
The inclusion of the Drum Corps brings movement, colour and a flavour of the Ceremonial and State occasions of which Royal Marines Bands are such an integral part. This ensures that the grand spectacle of the traditional Concert Finale is presented as a fitting climax with appropriate pomp and drama.
Although there have been Royal Marines Bands in Scotland since the late 1930's they were classed as 'ship bands' and after the Second World War were disbanded. In 1960 a Band was formed at HMS CONDOR in Arbroath. However, the Royal Marines Band Service was rearranged and the sole remaining band in Scotland, based at HMS COCHRANE, Rosyth, was designated the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Flag Officer Scotland and Northern Ireland in 1971. In 1994 again due to the reorganisation of the Band Service, the Band's title was changed to The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Scotland. Since 1996 the Band has been accommodated in a purpose built Band Room at the Royal Naval Support Establishment HMS CALEDONIA Rosyth. Scotland Band is unique as it is the only Royal Marines Band stationed north of London.
In their distinguishing white helmets, Royal Marines Bands are celebrated for the quality of their music, visual grandeur and precision drill. On the concert platform they enjoy a similar reputation ensuring their continuing popularity with their audiences. The Band's repertoire includes popular classics, Big Band, stimulating contemporary works and entertaining solo features. The Corps of Drums bring movement, colour and the tradition of the ceremonial occasions integral to the Royal Marines. Most members of the Band play at least two instruments and are required to perform in wind band, marching band, big band, orchestral and dance band combinations. They also provide jazz, string and woodwind ensembles, making the Royal Marines musician one of the most versatile and adept in military music.
The Band travels extensively throughout Scotland, Northern Ireland and the North of England and recent travel abroad have included engagements in Norway, Gibraltar, Columbia and Dubai. Regular ceremonial duties include the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, beating retreat on Horseguards Parade, ship launches, Homecoming parades and remembrance services. The Band also performs numerous concerts through the year in support of both service and non-service charities; including Seafarers UK, the Royal Marines Charitable Trust, the Rotary Club and the Royal British Legion.
As with all Royal Marines Bands the principal role is to provide musical support to the Naval Service, but within their secondary role the Band’s men and women undertake a variety of duties by sea and land on active service. Members of the Royal Marines Band Service have been deployed on active duty in all the major conflicts of the last century including serving in The Falklands, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. In October 2014 members of the Scotland Band were deployed for six months on board the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Ship ARGUS in support of the global effort to combat the Ebola virus.
The Band is currently under the direction of Captain Andy Gregory RM who assumed command in September 2012.
Drum And Showband – Adest Musica (Netherlands)
Drum and Showband, Adest Musica, from Sassenheim was founded in 1952. In the beginning, the association consisted of a harmony orchestra only, and later a drum and rhythm section was added. The harmony orchestra ceased in 1963 but the Drum section continued to flourish. Copper instruments including trumpets, trombones, euphoniums and sousaphones were introduced with the Orchestra growing into it’s present form.
With its high level and spectacular shows, the band always leaves an unforgettable impression with the spectators. Of course, the uniforms, which are copied from the uniforms of The Dutch Royal Grenadiers, add to the impressive view as well.
The Ravens Drum and Bugle Corps. (Athlone)
The Ravens Drum & Bugle Corps was set up in June 2008, for the purpose of the children of the community of Athlone to obtain a skill in music and the marching arts.
The Ravens have a diverse group of children from all ages and backgrounds who come together as one musical unit.
Their first performance was in 2008. The following year they competed in the Junior section of the Marching Band Association competition, and took home the All-Ireland Junior Title. The next four years would see them take the title of Champions Of Ireland. In 2010 they represented Ireland in the European finals in Holland. In 2014 they made history once again as the first band from Ireland to compete in the Drum Corps International Finals held in the USA.
Historical Flag Wavers Of Contrada Di Cori (Italy)
The history of flag waving Contradas of Choirs was formed in 1986. Taking their cue from the local holidays, mentioned as far back as the 16th Century, and linked to traditions in folklore, their display is rich in colour.
By virtue of their magnificent Renaissance costumes, sounds and games admirable and imaginative than the flag-waving, they can create a magical atmosphere.
Calgary Police Service Pipe Band (Canada)
Since its first public performance, leading the 1975 Calgary Stampede Parade, the Calgary Police Service Band has represented the City of Calgary and the Calgary Police Service by performing across Canada, The United States, and Europe.
The Calgary Police Service Band is made up of serving and retired police officers as well as civilian members. All members volunteer their own time to practice and perform.
Today the band has more than 50 pipers, drummers, and dancers and continues to perform annually at a wide variety of events including Calgary Police Service functions, municipal and provincial events, parades, and highland games.
The band performs with the permission of it Colonel-In-Chief, Rick Hanson.
Bleary & District Pipe Band (NI)
The band formed in 1956, and was made up of members from the townlands of Bleary, Ballydougan, Ballinagarrick, Clare and Knocknamuckley. In 1978, they acquired the service of Jimmy Johnston, who in 1976, was Pipe Major of Ballycoan when they won the Grade 2 World Championship.
Bleary & District was promoted to Grade 3 in 1979, and by the early 1980’s won prizes at this grade. After a break from competing, 1994 saw a return to RSPBA competitions at Grade 4 level. The remainder of the 90’s was one of Bleary’s brightest ever periods, winning several major championships at home and in Scotland, culminating in winning Grade 3A World Championship in Glasgow in August 1999, consequently the band was promoted to Grade 2. The band won the British Championship at this level at Pitlochry 2003, and tied for 1st place at the European and World Championships, with Top 6 prizes at Scottish and Cowal Championships the same year. The band are current holders of the UK Pipe Band Championship Grade 2 Title.
Killeen Pipe Band (NI)
In 1947, several members of Killeen LOL 1249 formed a band under the tutorship of acting Pipe Major Sam King and are based in Co Armagh. David Megarity was elected the band’s first Pipe Major and under his leadership, guided the band towards the competition arena. Jim Hewitt was elected the next Pipe Major, and was replaced by Alex Walker in 1987. Pipe Majors to follow Brian Megarity, Philip Boyce, Lester Megarity, Trevor McGavigan and John Cowan.
The band is led on parade by Drum Major Linzi Hamilton, and is under the direction of Pipe Major David Livingstone and Drum Sergeant Stephen Paynter. Both are long serving band members and are highly competent solo players.
The band have several achievements in competition at Grade 4, including, Grade 4 All-Ireland Championship, 2nd Place World Championships 1980. At Grade 3, the band won 2 All-Ireland titles, 2 Ulster titles, and 2 Major titles. At Grade 2, the band won 3 All-Ireland titles, 2nd European Championship, 2nd Scottish Championship, and a Top 10 finish in The World Championship 2010.
The band currently competes at Grade 3A and perform at local community, charity and Church events.
Thiepval Memorial Pipe Band (Donegal)
Formed in 1905, and formerly known as Convoy Pipe Band, the name was changed in 1919 to commemorate the many young men who died in the Theipval area of the Somme in 1916.
The band has a long history of competing: their first record was in 1938. The present Pipe Major is Alyson McKnight and Drum Sergeant is Clarke Campbell.
The band competes at Grade 3B and its most successful year to date was 2009 when they swept the boards at Grade 4B winning Scottish, British, All-Ireland, European and World Titles as well as Champion Of Champions and Supreme Champion Of Champions. The band was upgraded to 4A in 2010, and further to a successful season in 2011, was upgraded to Grade 3B.
Pipes & Drums 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment (NI)
The 2nd Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, 2 R IRISH, is Northern Ireland’s only Infantry Army Reserve Battalion. 2 R IRISH forms part of 16 Air Assault Brigade – UK’s high-readiness early entry force.
1 R IRISH has 4 companies located across Northern Ireland with their headquarters in Portadown, A Company in Belfast, B Company in Newtownabbey & C Company in Armagh & Enniskillen.
The Battalion currently has a mortar platoon and a machine gun platoon in addition to the normal infantry platoons.
2 R IRISH has a proud record of achievement in supporting the Regular Army on operational tours to Afghanistan, Iraq and Cyprus. The Battalion also mobilised personnel for the London 2012 Summer Olympics. In 2013, a platoon trained in Kenya, and further overseas training included Italy, Spain and a second platoon to Kenya.
Brookeborough Flute Band (NI)
One of the foremost flute bands in Northern Ireland, with a strong community base and a strong belief in giving young people a strong base from which to learn their instrument, but also to perform on a wide variety of stages. The quality of their music and the strong sense of being UlsterScots, has seen them travel to London, Scotland, as well as all parts of Ulster.
Stephen Crooks, recently appointed conductor of Brookeborough Flute Band, is currently studying at the Royal Irish Academy Of Music in Dublin. He has played with The National Symphony Orchestra Of Ireland, The European Youth Brass Brand and has conducted various musical ensembles throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic Of Ireland.
Lisburn Young Defenders Flute Band (NI)
Lisburn Young Defenders Flute Band is comprised mainly of members from the local area and was formed in 1970. The band currently play wooden simple system flutes, using Eb Piccolo, Bb Flute and F Flutes. They have been Melody Flute Band Champions of Ireland in 2000, 2001 and 2003. The band is currently made up of around 30 members. They take pride in seeing members learning and improving, working their way from the first night in a learner’s class to winning an Irish Championship in the Ulster Hall!
