The Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund (USBF) has opened applications for its New Entrant Production Trainee Scheme.
The scheme offers an exciting opportunity for individuals to begin their careers in the screen industries.
Running from May 2026 to May 2027, the scheme will provide hands-on experience across a range of Ulster-Scots funded productions, with successful candidates undertaking a series of placements rotating every three to four months across different Northern Ireland-based production companies.
The programme will begin with an intensive induction delivered by Northern Ireland Screen, including six days of initial training designed to equip trainees with the core skills required for a career in television production. Participants will take part in a five-day workshop covering all key stages of TV production, including development, research, filming, editing and delivery, working alongside industry professionals to create a short taster tape and receive expert feedback.
Trainees will also attend a dedicated Ulster-Scots workshop to deepen their understanding of the heritage, culture and language that underpin USBF-supported productions. Following this introductory training, trainees will be placed within production companies across Northern Ireland where they will gain practical experience working on television and digital projects, learning the full production process from development through to delivery and how to operate as part of a professional production team.
Throughout the scheme, trainees will be supported by an industry mentor and overseen by Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund Manager Heidi McAlpin, while also having opportunities to build networks and engage with key industry professionals and decision makers.
Heidi McAlpin, Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund Manager, said: “This trainee scheme is designed to give new entrants a strong foundation in television and digital production while highlighting the richness of Ulster-Scots culture. It’s an exciting first step into the industry, and we’re proud to support emerging talent through this programme.”
