Fact file
This section enables pupils to develop ICT, research and video production skills, while learning about a Great Ulster-Scot of their choice. It provides information on a number of famous Ulster-Scots people and how they have made a difference to the way we live today. Pupils are instructed to choose one famous Ulster-Scot and compile a fact file about them using various sources of information such as the Internet.
Pupils should have a look at the section 'What is an Ulster-Scot' first, as this page provides them with a brief history about Ulster-Scots to set the work in context.
The project task requires pupils to turn the fact file they have created into a video presentation, slideshow or newsletter. Detailed instructions are provided on how to create each of these, enabling pupils to develop a range of skills, such as production, story boarding, importing images, importing audio files, as well as editing and design skills.
It is advised that pupils carry out this work in pairs or small groups to allow for discussions. It is aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils, but can be used with younger pupils if greater guidance is given. Older pupils should be encouraged to research all information for themselves, but links to related web pages are provided for younger pupils using the resource. Audio files are also present in the 'Sound and Music' section which provide an aural profile of some of the characters.
Pupils are learning to:
- Understand the impact of individuals in history.
- Learn about the contribution Ulster-Scots have made throughout history.
- Find out about events and people from a variety of sources.
- Make effective notes while reading.
- Manage, recall, sort and organise information.
- Plan and collect information for a variety of formats.
- Communicate their knowledge in a variety of formats (presentation, print, film).
- Research information using the internet.
- Learn how to create a slide show, newsletter, or video production.
