Memory Game
This simple memory activity leads on to an opportunity for children to find out more about Ulster-Scots names. It introduces pupils to the meaning and origin of surnames and raises their awareness of how names are passed down families and spread to different locations.
This is achieved through a profile of various characters in the website. Pupils can click on the name of the character and learn about the origins and meaning of the name. It may be necessary to explain certain concepts to pupils such as the Plantation of Ulster.
The activity ends with a quiz about famous people with Ulster-Scots names. Pupils will need to make notes throughout this section to complete the activity.
This resource is ideal for starting off a discussion about surnames. It can be expanded on in various ways, for example, pupils could do a survey to find out the most common surnames in the class or school, or look into the meaning and origin of their own name. The topic of surnames is explored in greater detail in the 'Surnames' section of the website, so this game could serve as a fun and useful introduction to that section.
Pupils are learning to:
- Learn about the origin and meaning of surnames.
- Understand that surnames can provide us with information about the past.
- Make effective notes from their reading.
- Locate appropriate information in text.
- Learn about historical events such as the 'Plantation of Ulster'.
