Treasure Hunt
This activity encourages children to go on an internet treasure hunt. Pupils are given a question and a link to a website that contains the answer. They use the headings and images to scan the website for the information they need. Each answer they find results in another letter being added to the anagram puzzle. On successfully completing the puzzle they can print out their own certificate.
The websites and questions relate to Scottish history, geography and culture, introducing this to pupils in a simple form. The task is ideal for generating discussions about different cultures and traditions, and can be extended in various ways, for example by researching foods traditional to Scotland , such as haggis.
This activity is suited to upper Key Stage 2 pupils, who could complete the task unaided. More help may be needed by younger children as the language of the external websites can be quite difficult. While the activity can be carried out individually, working in pairs or groups is encouraged for useful discussions to be generated.
Pupils are learning to:
- Search the internet for information .
- Locate information using headings, sections, images etc .
- Scan read to locate appropriate information.
- Learn how to navigate a website.
- Develop research skills using a website.
- Develop an awareness of Scottish history and culture.
