A Trip to Scotland
This story can be used as a story time activity for Foundation or Key Stage 1 pupils or as the basis for a discussion about travel and culture with younger Key Stage 2 children. The story highlights such things as the closeness of Ulster to Scotland and the similarities and differences between them. It is ideal for generating discussions on issues such as family relations, different cultures, migration, and transport. It can be used alongside other resources on the website to introduce the term Ulster-Scot and inform pupils in a simple way about Scottish culture, e.g. bagpipes, kilts, and the Loch Ness monster. The resource also introduces the mythical story of Finn McCool, which pupils could investigate further.
For older pupils there is an accompanying workbook that can be downloaded from the resources section of the website. This workbook takes children on an Internet journey where they are required to plan a trip to Scotland and considers in greater detail issues of travel and transport (see 'Off to Scotland').
Pupils are learning to:
- Read, listen to, and respond to a story.
- Explore and understand their own and/or other cultures.
- Compare some of the similarities and differences between Scotland and Ulster
- Consider transport routes between Ulster and Scotland today and in the past.
