This booklet explores the links between Ulster and Scotland and focuses on geographical aspects of the two places. It introduces pupils to the term Ulster-Scots in a simple way and looks at the movement of people between Ulster and Scotland . Pupils are introduced to a variety of map skills, such as locating the British Isles , provinces of Ireland , counties of Ulster , and regions of Scotland . They are presented with information about Scotland and investigate the similarities and differences between Scotland and Ulster . Pupils are not only encouraged to make comparisons between the two places, but also to compare such things as transport use and networks across time.

A number of research activities are included, such as researching their own county and a region in Scotland , where pupils are encouraged to locate information from various sources including books, travel brochures, magazines, and the Internet. Pupils are given the opportunity to manage information and present it in a variety of formats, such as a poem, story, poster, and as part of an extension activity an information leaflet. Older pupils in particular can be encouraged to extend their research skills, producing detailed information and accounts.

The booklet is suitable for younger and older pupils as guidance and extension tasks are included. Potentially difficult concepts such as counties and regions are explored in simple and fun ways, for example through a crossword puzzle and jigsaw. Pupils can work through the booklet in pairs, groups, or individually, although it may be useful for pupils to carry out the research tasks in groups to enable them to share information and ideas.
