TEACHERS Teachers' Guides

Teachers' Guides: kids cooking

These guides are aimed at teachers' to provide knowledge and background information about Ulster-Scots traditions to set the site in context. They should give teachers' an understanding of the place of Ulster-Scots in the classroom. While they are primarily teacher guides, they can be used with upper Key Stage 2 pupils to introduce further information on the history of Ulster-Scots and the Ulster-Scots language. They may be a useful source of information for pupil projects.

The history guide, 'What Makes an Ulster-Scot', introduces Ulster-Scots traditions, including information on connections, colonization, cultural influences, impact on the landscape, and recommended resources, to give teachers' a background knowledge of these areas. It covers various movements between Scotland and Ireland , from 1000BC to the present day, considering significant events such as the Plantation of Ulster.

The Language guide is an introduction to Ulster-Scots language and its history. It considers such things as Ulster-Scots speaking areas, the history of the language including its origins, and the place of the Ulster-Scots language in primary schools today.

Pupils are learning to:

  • Learn about the history of Ulster-Scots.
  • Appreciate that different languages and traditions exist locally.
  • Understand that events in the past impact on the culture, language and landscape of today.
